Former student Georgie wins national volunteering award

Georgie received the Volunteers Award at the Scottish Health Awards for helping others through entertainment and mentorship.

The 28-year-old from NHS Tayside, who uses a communication device, brightens the days of hospital and care home patients with her radio request show in Perth.

She now co-hosts the show and has recently trained to be a mentor to people who use communication aid devices.

Every year she helps around 200 medical students to understand people with complex needs and the best way to communicate and assist those with communication aids.

She also educational staff on inclusion and equality and how to cater for people with disabilities.

During her time at National Star Georgie completed her Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

‘I have been volunteering at Perth Hospital radio, now newly re-named Care Sound Radio ever since I left college back in 2018,’ says Georgie.

‘I was inspired from my time at National Star to start a fun and exciting volunteering job as soon as I got home and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve had so many wonderful experiences while at National Star College and met some truly amazing people and I feel that they truly helped me become the woman that I am today.’

Georgie says she learned about independence at National Star. ‘I learnt that I love to keep busy and work hard, it was the best introduction into adulthood,’ says Georgie.

Georgie received the award at a gala ceremony in Edinburgh late last year. The competition is run by the run by the Daily Record in partnership with NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government.

“I’m flattered and honoured to have been nominated for this award,” Georgie said. “I feel so honoured to receive an award for doing something I absolutely love. It means so much to me.”
