Three members of an Ullenwood residential team went above and beyond to ensure a student’s transition from college went as smoothly as possible.

One of the facilitators, Dan, even came in on his holidays. He joined colleagues Sally and Jill on what proved to be a difficult transition.

They travelled with Ullenwood View student Ryan to the respite accommodation he was to stay in until his new home was ready. They agreed to stay 24 hours to ensure Ryan was safe and settled and to support the new team to understand Ryan’s needs.

The move didn’t go smoothly, and the care accommodation did not have all the necessary equipment Ryan needed to be safe. While Jill drove the National Star bus back to campus – a round trip of 254 miles – Sally and Dan remained with Ryan overnight to ensure he felt safe and secure.

National Star’s CEO, Lynette Barrett, visited Ullenwood View to pay a special thank you to the trio.

“It was a very traumatic situation and not many people would have done so much to ensure Ryan was safe and settled,” said Lynette. “Sally, Dan and Jill embody National Star’s values, especially that of integrity.”

Despite the challenges, all three agreed that they “would do it again in a heartbeat”.

Ryan’s family praised the trio’s care and support.  “We are very grateful for the support from Dan, Sally and Jill,” said his family. “We’re so thankful for them bringing Ryan to his respite, making his trip calmer and giving him the reassurance he needed. We also want to thank them for giving the opportunity to hand over to his new staff.”
