National Star students showed off their amazing cooking talents at the launch of the British Asparagus Festival.
At StarBistro, the students transformed the first Vale of Evesham asparagus of the season into delicious soup and other asparagus themed dishes.
The festival is a Vale tradition heralding the arrival of the beloved green spear. Festivities kicked off on 23 April (St George’s Day) with music and dancing at The Fleece Inn in Bretforton before attendees embarked on a special trip aboard the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway to Cheltenham. On board the Asparagus Express was a bundle of the first 100 asparagus tips grown this season.
A group of VIPs travelled on to StarBistro and presented the asparagus to Seth, a third year work outcome student, whose dream is to become a chef. They then enjoyed a special meal in StarBistro.
Seth, working alongside other students and the StarBistro team, turned the asparagus into delicious soup. The soup is just one of several special asparagus dishes on offer at StarBistro during the asparagus season.
National Star Chief Executive Lynette Barrett said: ‘Thank you so much to the British Asparagus Festival, GWSR, The Fleece and Wychavon District Council for involving National Star in this amazing tradition.
‘Preparing young people with disabilities for adulthood is what National Star is all about. An important part of that preparation is learning about healthy eating, understanding the importance of local seasonal food and of course how to prepare balanced and tasty meals.
‘StarBistro is open to the public so why don’t you come and try these amazing dishes for yourself and celebrate the arrival of spring and asparagus?’
