Young people with disabilities had the opportunity to quiz General Election candidates at a special event organised by National Star.
Candidates from five Gloucestershire constituencies met students and heard about the issues that concern them.
The round table discussions at the Cheltenham college for young people with disabilities will also help candidates to understand the challenges facing the young people and their families.
“National Star is passionate about enabling young people with disabilities to become active citizens and that includes using their democratic freedom to choose who represents them in government,” said Lynette Barrett, National Star Chief Executive Officer.
“These young people and their families often must fight for equality in education and to access the care and support which will enable them to lead fulfilling lives. It is important for candidates to understand these challenges and to explain to the young people what their parties plan to do to address the issues in adult social care and in special educational needs.”
National Star teams are working with students to help them understand the electoral process and the policies of the parties.
As part of the preparation for the General Election, National Star’s recent Student Union election replicated what will happen, complete with polling stations and showing photo identification.
Further events have been staged at National Star’s campus in Hereford.
